The purpose of the Mathflash program is to aid in teaching
primary grade students basic math skills while at the same time
helping them become acquainted with computers.
I. Installation.
A. DOS
In a DOS installation, Mathflash may be run from either a
fixed disk drive or a removable ("floppy") disk. If you do
wish to place Mathflash on your fixed disk, simply copy the
files from the disk you received them on, to the directory
you wish to run it from.
To run Mathflash, simply type the program name, MATH and
press the [Enter] key.
B. Windows
In order to run Mathflash from Windows, copy the files to
your fixed disk. using the following steps:
1. On the C: drive, create a directory named \MATH. If
you wish to install Mathflash in a directory other than
\MATH or on a drive other than C:, consult your Windows
documentation for instructions on using the .PIF editor
to change the drive and directory information in the
MATH.PIF file.
2. Copy all the files from the distribution disk into the
\MATH directory.
3. Start Windows.
4. Click the mouse on the program group you wish to add
Mathflash to.
5. Click the mouse on the Files option on the Program
Manager menu bar. Choose NEW, make certain that program
item is selected and click on OK.
6. You should now be in the "Program Item Properties"
dialogue box.
a. For the description, enter Mathflash.
b. For the command line, enter C:\MATH\MATH.PIF.
(Alternatively, you may select MATH.PIF by using
the Browse facility.)
c. For the working directory (Windows 3.1), enter C:\MATH.
7. If you would like to use an Icon other than the Windows
default, click on Change Icon; this will bring up the "Change
Icon" dialogue box.
You may select one of the Icons available from Program Manager,
an Icon selected through the Browse facility, or you may enter
C:\MATH\MATH.ICO in the space for Filename.
Click on OK to return to the "Program Item Properties" dialouge
box.
8. To return to Program Manager from the "Program Item Properties"
Dialouge box, Click on OK.
Mathflash is now installed. You may run it from within
Windows by double-clicking on the Mathflash icon.
II. Using Mathflash.
A. Once Mathflash is started, it will present a title screen.
Simply press any key to move on to the main menu. The main
menu has 4 selections:
1. Learn to Count:
Runs through a series of questions (the default is 10
times). It chooses a number from 0 to 10 and displays
that many shapes and prompts you to enter how many of
the shapes are displayed.
2. Learn to Add:
Displays two numbers and two groups of shapes with a
corresponding number of objects in each set. Mathflash
prompts you to enter the total. The total of the two
numbers will never be greater than 10.
3. Learn to Subtract:
Displays two numbers and two groups of shapes with a
corresponding number of objects in each set. On color
monitors, the second group of shapes is red to help
distinguish this selection from the addition choice.
Mathflash prompts you to enter the total. The result
of the subtraction will never be negative, though it
may be zero.
4. Setup:
Allows you to control how many questions are in a
series. It also allows you to control whether or not
the program keeps score. If you need to configure the
program for your particular video system, you should
instead run the SETUP (see section III) program. It
should not be necessary to run SETUP for video systems
capable of running Microsoft Windows.
B. Scoring
After finishing a series of questions, Mathflash displays a
score consisting of the number of questions answered
correctly and the total number possible. Additionally,
depending on the ratio of correct to possible, Mathflash will
display one of the following messages:
Percentage Message
90% or better Great Job!
70% or better Good Work!
60% or less Keep Trying.
C. Keyboard Input
When entering numbers, use either the number keys along the
top row of the keyboard, or the numeric keypad on the right
of the keyboard (assuming that the Numlock key is on). If
you make a mistake, use the Backspace key (not the left arrow
key). When you have finished entering the number, press
either <Enter> key. Exit from a test at any time by
pressing the <Esc> key.
III. Troubleshooting.
The Mathflash program is capable of running on any IBM
compatible computer equipped with a CGA, EGA, VGA, or
Monochrome Hercules video adapter.
Normally, Mathflash automatically detects which video
adapter is present and configures itself to use it. If
Mathflash is unable to identify an appropriate adapter, it
prints an error message.
Mathflash may not be able to properly detect some non-
standard video adapters. If this happens, set the video mode
using the SETUP.EXE program. The SETUP program prompts your
for which video adapter to use (including the default of
auto-detection) and, for CGA, EGA, and VGA adapters only,
whether to use color or monochrome graphics. After
confirming the choices, SETUP rewrites Mathflash's
configuration accordingly.
